NIPR Hosts New NUJ President, Harps On Nurturing Relationship
The leadership of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has played host to the new president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) where it emphasised on the need to not just establish, but nurture relationships.
At a dinner on Thursday, December 19, 2024 in Abuja hosted by NIPR President, Dr. Ike Neliaku to familiarise with the new president of the union, Alhassan Yahaya and appreciate his predecessor, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, a member of NIPR for a meritorious service, Dr. Neliaku assured the new leadership of the Institute's support to help him succeed.
"It is not enough to establish relationships. It is more fundamental to maintain relationships, and then more strategic to nurture relationships, perhaps more important to ensure that relationships are maintained strategically.
"That's why we feel that we must establish a culture of building relationship across boundaries, across borders. We are delighted to have this opportunity to receive you and members of your team and to assure you that the NIPR will continue to support you. Your success is important to us", he stated.
Dr. Neliaku added that professionals have a role to play in rebuilding Nigeria and not to leave it in the hands of interlopers.
"When those who have excelled in their professions are involved in leadership, you'll see that they will bring knowledge, their experience and professionalism. One of the elements of professionalism is excellence, you see it play out", he stated further.
NIPR and NUJ have existing partnership especially with regards to weeding out quacks in both public relations and journalism. The partnership led to the induction of dozens of journalists into the NIPR fold in recent times.
In his response, the NUJ President assured his readiness to sustain the existing relationship between NIPR and his union, noting that even a greater number of NUJ members will, in coming days, be inducted as NIPR members.
While emphasising that developmental journalism will be the core focus of his leadership of the union, Yahaya added that NUJ under his watch will prioritise national security.
Earlier in his remarks, the immediate past President of NUJ, Dr. Isiguzo expressed gratitude to the leadership of NIPR for always carrying the union along in several activities of the Institute, expressing delight that the relationship did not end with him as NUJ leader.
He expressed confidence in the capacity of his successor to build on the existing relationship between both organisations.
